What is a customer avatar?

A customer Avatar represents your perfect customer in fictional form.  They are essentially, who you are created your business, your content, and your products or services for.  Without them, your business ceases to exist.

Why is having a customer avatar important?

I just said it.  Without knowing your target audience, your business will cease to exist.  The process of crafting your ideal customer Avatar helps you understand who your audience is, how to find them, what their pain points are, and how you can help them.

With that said, lets get straight to it!

Creating a Customer Avatar that Sells Step 1:

Avatar Basics

The first essential step to creating your Avatar is to craft the basics.

It is important to think about your Avatar as a real person because that's exactly who you want to speak to through everything you do in your business.

Pretend as if you're having lunch with your ideal customer.  They are sitting across from you and you have just met.  What do you say or ask a real person you have just met?  What do you think about?  What is your first impression of them?

  • What is their name?
  • How old are they?
  • Are they married?
  • Do they have children?
  • Where do they live?
  • What is their profession?
  • What is their household income?
  • What is their hair color?
  • Eye color?
  • Weight?

Creating a Customer Avatar that Sells Step 2:

Personal details

The second step to creating a customer Avatar that sells is to think about their personal life.

This is where the conversation extends past the basics.  You start to become interested in what they do for a living.  For the purpose of helping you think of your Avatar as a real person, I will refer to them as a "her" in this post from this point on.

  • How long has she worked at her current job?
  • What exactly does she do on a day to day basis?
  • What are her hobbies?
  • What are her personal interests?

Creating a Customer Avatar that Sells Step 3:

connections

The third step in creating a customer Avatar that sells is to dig in a little deeper when it comes to her personal interests and hobbies.

This is where you may find some common interests with the person you are getting to know.  You find out they like the same types of movies that they do.  You wear the same brand of shoes.  You shop at the same stores.  You think this person may actually be someone you could hang out with on a regular basis.

You must dig in this deeply when it comes to crafting your ideal customer Avatar as well.

  • Where does she like to shop?
  • What movies does she enjoy watching?
  • What does she like to do with her family?
  • What are her favorite brands?
  • What does she watch on television?
  • What are her personal goals?
  • What are her business goals?
  • What are her family goals?
  • What resource does she use for news updates?
  • What food and restaurants does she like?

Creating a Customer Avatar that Sells Step 4:

pain points and triumphs

The fourth step in creating a customer Avatar that sells is to think about their pain points.  This step is so important!  Why do customers buy things?  Because whatever they are buying is solving a problem for them.  A woman buys makeup, not because she necessarily loves playing with it, but because she wants others to think she is beautiful.  So makeup solves the problem of not feeling pretty enough.

Apple hit the nail on the head when they created iPhones and other products.  They realized that the average person did not have the technical expertise to navigate most technology so they dove into creating products that the average Joe could use without the help of an expert.

What are you customer's pain points?

Examples:

Problem- Not enough time to cook a healthy dinner

Problem- Expensive shipping prices for commonly purchased items

Problem-Can't afford to have dog professionally groomed

After you have come up with some pain points, think about what would happen to the Avatar if they did not find a solution to their pain.

  • How would this make her feel?
  • How would this effect her personal life?
  • What are the financial consequences?
  • What are her personal and professional consequences?

What would happen if your ideal customer did find a solution to their pain?

Creating a Customer Avatar that Sells Step 5:

The fifth step to creating a customer Avatar that sells is to come up with solutions to your customer's pain points.  Let's look at the problems from Step 4:

Problem- Not enough time to cook a healthy dinner

Solution- Ready to eat meals delivered right to your door

Problem- Expensive shipping prices for commonly purchased items

Solution- Offering a set monthly fee for shipping

Problem-Can't afford to have dog professionally groomed

Solution-Creating a training course that teaches people how to groom their own dog

Creating a Customer Avatar that Sells Step 6:
